Sleep Apnea Testing by Medicina Medical

Nursing Home Sleep Testing

Medicina Medical offers on-site Nursing Home Sleep Apnea Testing with therapy and treatment recommendations by a board certified sleep physician. Medicina Medical will conduct the screening using the ResMed Apnea Link diagnostic device and provide the sleep physician with the test results. Upon a positive diagnosis of OSA, Medicina will initiate continuous positive air pressure (CPAP) or bi-level positive air (BiPAP) therapy per physician’s order. The sleep test results and signed interpretation letter from the sleep doctor will be provided to the facility for patients being discharged home with orders for PAP therapy.

What is Nursing Home Sleep Testing?

In order to diagnose Sleep Apnea or other sleep disorders, a patient must undergo a polysomnography (sleep study). This is typically done in a sleep lab, requiring the patient to spend the night in-lab, while the polysomnography (PSG) equipment records his/her physiological data. However, with technological advancements a polysomnography can now be performed at the nursing home. This service is the most cost effective and convenient way for nursing home residents to get tested without having to spend a night at a sleep lab away from the facility.

Evidence suggests that sleep disorders and sleep fragmentation are very common in nursing home residents. A variety of factors contribute to these sleeping difficulties, including age-related changes in sleep patterns; the high prevalence of dementia, depression, medical illness and medications that affect sleep; and sleep disorders such as respiratory disturbance of sleep. Other important factors include common life style characteristics in nursing home residents (such as inactivity, large amounts of time spent in bed, lack of bright light exposure, and poor sleep hygiene) and the disruptive night-time nursing home environment. Assessment and management of sleeping problems in nursing home residents should involve comprehensive assessment and treatment of the multiple factors that can interfere with your residents sleep.

Ordering a sleep study and how the process works:

1) Call Medicina customer service at 1-216-351-0224. Fax the resident face sheet, enrollment form and sleep test order to 1-866-763-9505.
2) Upon receipt of the order, we will deliver and instruct nursing staff on how to setup the ApneaLink device on the resident at bedtime.
3) The resident wears a chest strap, nasal cannula and oxygen sensor during sleep.
4) The next morning the ApneaLink device will be picked up and the test results are downloaded to our sleep diagnostic lab for scoring by a certified sleep technician.
5) A board certified sleep doctor reviews the test report and makes therapy recommendations based on a positive diagnosis of Obstructive Sleep Apnea.
6) Results and therapy recommendations are fax directly to the facility within 4 days of the sleep test.
7) The prescribing physician reviews the information provided by the sleep doctor and authorizes CPAP/BiPAP therapy based on a confirmation and diagnosis of Obstructive Sleep Apnea.  The sleep test results and a signed interpretation letter from the sleep doctor will be provided to the facility for patients being discharged home with orders for PAP therapy.
8) Medicina Medical Respiratory Therapist will visit the facility to setup residents who are prescribed PAP therapy.
